Injections during the Fast

Question

Zayd needs an injection in blessed Ramadan on account of illness — whether it is fever, a boil or some other situation. May he have the injection or not? And is there any case in which it is permissible or not? If there is, will it not contradict the hadith: [ar]الْفِطْرُ مِمَّا دَخَلَ وَلَيْسَ مِمَّا خَرَجَ[/ar] “Breaking the fast is from what enters, not from what exits” (“Sharh al-Wiqaya”, vol. 1, p. 197)?

Answer

An injection does not break the fast. As for the words: [ar]الْفِطْرُ مِمَّا دَخَلَ وَلَيْسَ مِمَّا خَرَجَ[/ar] “Breaking the fast is from what enters, not from what exits” — firstly, this is not a universal rule but concerns a particular occasion, as becomes clear on the slightest reflection (كما يظهر بأدنى تأمل); secondly, it is not meant as a restriction (hasr)
