Supplicating for Forgiveness for a Fasiq and a Fajir
Question
Is it better to supplicate for forgiveness for a Muslim who is a fajir (sinner) and fasiq, or not? Zayd says that one should by no means supplicate for forgiveness for a Muslim fajir and fasiq, although it is not haram. Khalid says that one should supplicate for forgiveness for a Muslim fasiq and fajir as well, including after his death, and that supplicating for forgiveness even for such a Muslim fajir and fasiq is better than not supplicating.
Answer
[ar]لِقَوْلِهِ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ: «صَلُّوا عَلَى كُلِّ بَرٍّ وَفَاجِرٍ» الحديث[/ar] “On account of the saying of [the Prophet] ﷺ: ‘Pray over everyone, righteous and sinful (fajir)’” (hadith; “Sunan Abi Dawud”). Khalid’s statement is correct.
