Shortening (qasr) of the sunna prayers on a journey

Question

When, in the state of travel, the fard prayers are shortened (qasr), should the sunna prayers also be shortened, or must they be prayed in full? Or, while travelling and shortening the fard prayers, are they waived? Or will not praying them cause a deficiency in the prayer? For if the sunna prayers remain as they were, then shortening only the fard prayers on a journey is not a complete relief from Allah.

Answer

If the traveller is actually on the road and has stopped somewhere only for the prayer, then he has no need to pray the sunna prayers and there is no emphasis (ta'kid) on them. However, if he is not in a hurry, praying them is better (afdal). But if he is staying somewhere — for example, he has stopped for two to four days — then he should pray the sunna prayers in full.
