Listening to Qur’an Recitation on the Radio

Question

Upon a Qur’an recitation or a sermon on the radio, is silence (insat), attentive listening (istima‘), the sajda al-tilawa, and reciting salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ wajib?

Answer

Hazrat Thanawi ﵀ says concerning recitation from a gramophone: it is not recitation (tilawa) but a copy and reflection of recitation, resembling the voice of a bird and an echo; listening to it does not make the prostration wajib (“Fatawa Imdadiyya”, vol. 2, p. 182). The ruling on the radio is likewise the same.
