Saying salawat during the prayer on hearing the blessed name of the Prophet ﷺ
Question
If the imam, during the prayer, recited the verse: [ar]وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ[/ar] “Muhammad is but a messenger” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:144), and one of the muqtadis, thinking that on hearing the blessed name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one ought to say salawat, therefore said “ﷺ” as soon as he heard the blessed name — then surely no defect has come into the prayer through this?
Answer
His thought is correct in that on hearing the blessed name one ought to say salawat; the hadiths lay great emphasis on this. However, this command concerns [the state] outside the prayer; within the prayer there is no such command. Therefore, if he said salawat in the prayer with this intention, the prayer became fasid (invalid).
