Repeating a verse or sura within one rak‘a

Question

Is it permissible in prayer to recite one sura or one verse over and over within a single rak‘a, or not? That is, if some sura or verse is recited again and again in one and the same rak‘a, will this cause any harm to the prayer?

Answer

The prayer is valid, but doing so deliberately in a fard prayer is makruh; in a nafl prayer it is not makruh. [ar]ويكره تكرار السورة في ركعة واحدة من الفرض، وقيّد بالفرض لأنه لا يكره في النفل؛ لأن شأنه أوسع، لأنه ﷺ قام إلى الصباح بآية واحدة يكررها في تهجد اهـ[/ar] “Repeating a sura within a single rak‘a of a fard prayer is makruh.
