Reciting several suras in one rak‘a
Question
If a person recites several suras in one rak‘a — for example, after Surah al-Naba’, “Qul huwa’llahu” (Surah al-Ikhlas), then al-Nas — is this permissible? Second: should “Bismillah” be recited at the start of each sura or not?
Answer
In fard prayers it is inappropriate; in nafl prayers there is no harm (“Tahtawi”). In an audible (jahri) prayer one should not recite “Bismillah” at the start of the sura; in a silent (sirri) one, one should recite it. This very way is better (“Tahtawi”, p. 142).
