Which suras should be recited in the fajr prayer

Question

The imam leads the fajr prayer, and there is still a long time before the disliked (makruh) time sets in. In the recitation he recites Surah al-Naba’, al-Buruj or another sura of that length, and he says the tasbihs five times. But some of the muqtadis say that the prayer takes too long: “Standing and standing, our feet begin to ache; pray your own prayer when you stand for a long time” — although these muqtadis are healthy, none of them is weak, and they say this merely out of their nafs (lower self)

Answer

It is precisely out of consideration for ordinary muqtadis that the fuqaha’ have written that reciting the long suras of the mufassal (tiwal al-mufassal) in the fajr prayer is mustahabb. Hence reciting Surah al-Naba’ and Surah al-Buruj is contrary neither to [such] consideration nor to what is mustahabb, especially when the muqtadis are healthy and strong (thus in “Tahtawi”).
