Prayer with recitation of the basmala alone

Question

Someone performed the prayer [reciting] only the tasmiya. All the scholars of usul agree that the prayer will not be valid, even though there is a narration from our Imam about the validity of the prayer, as in “Sharh al-Jami‘ al-Saghir”. [ar]أما قولهم: بشبهة في كونها آية تامة[/ar] “As for their words, ‘because of doubt about its being a complete verse’” — this phrase does not establish the invalidity of the prayer, [ar]لأنه لو قرأ آية طويلة في كل ركعة بعضها عامة على أنه يجوز الصلاة، وفي الكافي: وهو الأصح.

Answer

[ar]وهي آية من القرآن أنزلت للفصل بين السور، فما في النمل بعض آية إجماعًا، وليست من الفاتحة ولا من كل سورة في الأصح، فتحرم على الجنب، ولم تجز الصلاة بها احتياطًا، ولم يكفر جاهدها بشبه اختلاف مالك فيها[/ar] “It is a verse of the Qur’an revealed to separate the suras. What is in [Surah] al-Naml is part of a verse by consensus.
