Similar passages (mutashabih) in recitation

Question

In the prayer, [a person] began a certain sura and from some point in the middle passed on to another sura. What should he do now — return to the first sura or continue the second? And will he also have to perform sajda al-sahw (the prostration of forgetfulness)?

Answer

If he has already recited an amount after which he ought to perform ruku‘, then let him perform ruku‘. Otherwise, if he remembered after reciting one or two words, let him return to the sura he began first; but if he remembers after reciting more, let him not return, but recite the sura he has reached. There is no sajda al-sahw in such a case.
