The Imamate of a Hafiz Who Is a Fasiq
Question
A certain man is a hafiz of the Qur’an, but according to the Shari‘a he is a fasiq. This respected hafiz also recites the Qur’an [in tarawih] in blessed Ramadan. In the mosque where this hafiz recites the Qur’an there is a respected, appointed hafiz who leads the prayer in this mosque all year round; this respected imam also prays tarawih behind him, as well as the fard of ‘Isha’ and so on.
Answer
The questioner has not stated any details of this respected hafiz’s sinfulness (fisq), but has asked a general question; therefore a general answer is given. It is now the questioner’s own responsibility to ascertain whether the definition of a fasiq applies in the case asked about or not.
