A Second Congregation in the Mosque Courtyard
Question
The respected ulama (especially Thanawi ﵀) have written that a second congregation in any part of the mosque is makruh. Yet I have seen most people of knowledge, as well as members of the Tablighi Jamaat, practising a second congregation in the courtyard of the mosque and the like. If a second congregation is taking place, should a person who has not yet prayed with a congregation join it or pray separately?
Answer
A place that is designated for prayer, whether roofed or unroofed, where there is an established practice of the five daily adhans and congregations — there, after one congregation has been held in the usual way, a second congregation is makruh, although the fard will be discharged. The proofs are set out in al-Qutuf al-Daniya.
