Appointing a person addicted to intoxicants as mu’adhdhin

Question

The mu’adhdhin takes intoxicants, and when he is told to stop he says that he cannot do without them. The whole neighbourhood knows about this. What is the Shari‘a ruling regarding his serving as mu’adhdhin?

Answer

Appointing such a man as mu’adhdhin is makruh tahrimi, until he makes a firm and sincere repentance from intoxicants.
