The adhan of one who plays chess

Question

The mu’adhdhin plays chess. Is there any defect in his adhan according to the Shari‘a?

Answer

The mu’adhdhin ought to be a follower of the Sunna. The adhan is a very great trust (amana). Chess is prohibited, and it impairs trustworthiness. ‘Allama Ibn Hajar al-Makki al-Shafi‘i ﵀ listed it among the major sins (kaba’ir).
