Giving the adhan in a low voice
Question
A certain person, out of some hostility, is carrying on propaganda: he himself does so and also urges others that the adhan should be given quietly, from a place where some people cannot hear it. For example, the place of the adhan is in front of the mosque, but he says it should be given behind the mosque so that others do not hear it — we will pray beforehand, and they can pray separately on their own. The point of the question is: what is the standing of such a person in the Shari‘a?
Answer
The adhan should be given in a loud voice from an elevated place, so that the voice reaches as far as possible: everything that the voice of the mu’adhdhin reaches will bear witness in his favour. Saying the adhan quietly so that the voice does not reach others defeats the purpose of the adhan, and doing so is makruh.
