Deception and Causing Harm

Question

If someone deceives a Muslim in order to take his property, or causes harm to a Muslim in any other way, what is the ruling for such a person in the light of the Shari‘a?

Answer

Deception is a grave, blameworthy [sin]. It is stated in “Mishkat al-Masabih”: [ar]مَنْ غَشَّ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي[/ar] “Whoever deceives us is not of us” (hadith). [ar]لَا يَحِلُّ مَالُ امْرِئٍ إِلَّا بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ مِنْهُ[/ar] “The property of a person is not lawful [to take] except with his willing consent” (hadith, “Mishkat al-Masabih”, p. 255).
