Letting the Hands Hang (Irsal) in Prayer
Question
Is it true that in the Maliki school one prays with the hands let down (loose)? On which hadith is this practice based?
Answer
Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in “Fath al-Bari”, in the chapter “Placing the Right Hand upon the Left in Prayer”, related three narrations (riwayat) from Imam Malik: the first agrees with the majority (jumhur) — this is the very content of the chapter heading; the second is irsal (letting the hands hang down)
