Folding the Hands in Prayer

Question

In our village people of the Shia community also live: they pray with their hands let loose, while we follow the Hanafi school; these people urge us towards the Shia madhhab and say that it is not written anywhere in the hadith or the Qur’an that the prayer should be [begun] with the intention (niyya) [tied], nor is there any command to pray with the hands folded. Please give an answer in the light of the Qur’an and hadith.

Answer

The Holy Qur’an clearly and directly contains a command to follow and obey the noble Prophet ﷺ: [ar]وَمَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ[/ar] “And whatever the Messenger has given you, take it…” (Surah al-Hashr, 59:7). Moreover, the noble Prophet ﷺ himself, while standing (qiyam) in prayer, prayed with his hands folded, and he instructed others to do likewise.
