Are There Prophets in All Seven Earths?

Question

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that one like me [a prophet] exists in each of the seven layers of the earth. What is the status of this narration? If it is sound, what is its meaning?

Answer

This narration is not found among the Six Books (al-Kutub al-Sitta); however, in ‘al-Durr al-Manthur’ it is recorded as mawquf (stopped) on Hazrat Ibn ‘Abbas ﵁. On this, Hujjat al-Islam Mawlana Qasim Nanotawi ﵀ has spoken in detail in his treatise ‘Tahdhir al-Nas’, and Mawlana ‘Abd al-Hayy Lakhnawi ﵀ at the beginning of his ‘Majmu‘a-yi Fatawa’ (‘Collection of Fatwas’)
