Touching the Quran in a State of Janaba
Question
What is the ruling on touching the Noble Quran without wudu? In the Noble Quran it is stated: [ar]لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ[/ar] “None touch it except the purified” (Surah al-Waqi‘a, 56:79) — from which it appears that only the pure (tahir) may touch it, not the impure (najis). The matter requiring clarification is this: does [the term] “impure” apply to one in janaba, and not to one who lacks wudu?
Answer
Ritual impurity (hadath) is of two kinds: minor and major. Both kinds prevent one from touching the Noble Quran, performing prayer, and performing tawaf. But reciting the Quran without touching it, and entering the mosque, are prevented only by the second kind — the major hadath; the first kind does not prevent them.
