If Nikah Hinders Studies but the Parents Press for It
Question
Zayd is still pursuing his education; Zayd is sane and adult (baligh). Zayd’s family are pressing him to marry, but Zayd does not want to marry yet; even his parents and other relatives are loudly insisting that Zayd should be married. But Zayd wants the marriage to be postponed. What should Zayd do in these circumstances?
Answer
If Zayd does not fear falling into sin, and it is his predominant expectation that after nikah he will face obstacles in acquiring knowledge, then he has the right to postpone the nikah. If the parents insist only on the nikah and postpone the bride’s send-off to her husband’s home, then Zayd should not refuse this.
