The Daff and Firecrackers at a Wedding
Question
What is the ruling on using two to four firecrackers and the daff (frame drum) at a wedding? Some of the ‘ulama in our area say it is permissible, and some say it is impermissible. So what needs to be clarified now is: whose opinion should ordinary people act upon? If it is entirely impermissible and someone commits this act, what is the ruling concerning him? And if it is permissible, then to what extent is it permissible, and until when may one play? Please write in detail and with proofs.
Answer
Beating the daff to announce the nikah is correct according to the Shari‘a, on condition that it has no jalajil (jingles), that it is not beaten in the manner of tarab (musical rapture), and that it is beaten solely for announcement and publicity. The use of firecrackers is a waste of wealth and impermissible. [ar]لا بأس بالدف ليلة العرس.
