Announcing the Nikah by Means of the Daf

Question

When singing, playing music and listening to it are generally haram, how did the daf as an instrument become halal? As it is in the noble hadith that the nikah should be announced with it — from this the permissibility of the daf as an instrument is understood.

Answer

There is a command to announce the nikah, and one of its forms is also that the daf be beaten for it. If the announcement is achieved without the daf, there is no need for it. And the daf too must be one without jalajil (jingles); with jalajil it is makruh. [ar]روى الترمذي عن عائشة ﵂ قالت: قال رسول الله ﷺ: أعلنوا هذا النكاح، واجعلوه في المساجد، واضربوا عليه بالدف.
