Nikah within One’s Own Clan

Question

Among some Muslims here there has been a custom from ancient times that the nikah of boys and girls is not made within the father’s family, that is, within the clan lineage and tribe. They regard a nikah between a boy and a girl of the same clan and family as bad and impermissible, considering them brother and sister — even if the son of the paternal uncle (the father’s elder or younger brother)

Answer

This custom and practice is wrong and un-Islamic; breaking it is wajib. Regarding as haram what Allah the Pure has made halal is very great ignorance. But in spite of this, a nikah that is made in another family in the manner of the Shari‘a will not be called impermissible and haram — otherwise it would be a second ignorance.
