Nikah and the Bride’s Send-off at Particular Times Are Not a Bad Omen
Question
Question: Nowadays the common people perform a girl’s nikah and her send-off to her husband’s home in the third, fifth or seventh year, or else in the first year; they do not do it in an even year, regarding it as ill-omened. Is this shirk or an act of shirk? And even if there is no such belief, does this form resemble shirk or not?
Answer
This notion is taking a bad omen and evil augury. It is not an Islamic belief; repentance from it is necessary (lazim): [ar]لا عدوى ولا طيرة[/ar] “There is no contagion and no evil omen” (hadith). Those who do not hold this belief should avoid imitation (tashabbuh)
