The Condition for Prohibition by Affinity
Question
A woman named Fatima went to live in the house of her husband Zayd, and Zayd’s father, named ‘Umar, also lives together with his son Zayd. After some time, the said Fatima went to her parents’ home and accused her father-in-law ‘Umar, (saying) that her father-in-law ‘Umar had seized her with an evil look and harbours an evil intention. There is no witness; rather, ordinary people say that this incident really did happen, but there is no eyewitness; in this dispute everyone is pointing fingers.
Answer
If Zayd has certainty or a predominant supposition (zann ghalib) that the words of the said Fatima are true, then she has become haram for Zayd; but the nikah has not been broken by this until mutaraka (relinquishment of the marriage)
