Scattering dried dates at a nikah and entering the nikah in a register
Question
What do the scholars of religion say about the following: it is widely held that snatching the sweets of a nikah is a sunna. For this reason, in our neighbourhood a storm of unruliness breaks out at the nikah gathering when the sweets are distributed. When the distributor lifts the basket of sweets and places sweets in the hands of two to four people, at some point sturdy young lads pounce, a scuffle begins, and some of the older children even get hurt.
Answer
The religious scholar’s statement is correct. It is necessary (lazim) to avoid this unruliness, the wasting of property and the desecration of the mosque. If people do not desist and do not observe the respect due to the mosque, then the nikah should not be arranged in the mosque. [ar]ومنه الحديث: أنه نُثِرَ شيء في أملاكٍ فلم يأخذوه، فقال: ما لكم لا تنتهبون؟
