The Sunna Method of Nikah Involving a Wakil and a Qadi; Who Performed the Nikah of Fatima ﵂?

Question

The prevailing method of performing a nikah is that one person acts as agent (wakil) on behalf of the girl; he takes both witnesses with him and goes to the girl, ascertains from her her consent regarding herself and the amount of the mahr, and they then come to the officiant of the nikah.

Answer

If the girl is adult (baligha), the guardian (wali) should say to her: “I am marrying you to such-and-such a young man for such-and-such a mahr; is this acceptable to you? You have no objection?” Then, before witnesses, he should either himself have the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul)
