Holding a stick in the hand during the khutba

Is taking a stick while delivering the Jumu‘a khutba a sunna or wajib?

Answer

It is not wajib; it is a sunna (a non-emphasized one). [ar]ويكره أن يتكأ على قوس أو عصا (الدر المختار). قال الشامي: متوكئًا على عصا أو قوس، ونقل القهستاني عن عيد المحيط أن أخذ العصا سنة[/ar] “And it is makruh to lean on a bow or a staff” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
