A sermon before Jumu'a

Question

In our Jami' Mosque the imam, immediately after the adhan and before the sunnas, begins a sermon and an instructive talk in which necessary rulings are taught. Is this permissible or not?

Answer

When the imam gives an instructive talk and explains religious rulings, everyone should listen in silence at that time. This practice is established by the noble hadith. This was also the custom of Hazrat Tamim al-Dari ﵁ and Hazrat Abu Hurayra ﵁. Mulla 'Ali al-Qari ﵀ has cited it.
