A sermon before the Friday khutba

Question

Zayd has the practice of delivering a sermon on Friday before the khutba, at the time when people — who keep arriving right up to the start of the khutba — are performing the emphasized sunna. Most people object to Zayd delivering a sermon at this time, because those occupied with prayer are disturbed in their prayer and make mistakes and omissions.

[ar]أخرج ابن عساكر عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن أن تميمًا الداري اِسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ ﵁ فِي الْقَصَصِ سِنِينَ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَهُ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَهُ فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ، فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ لَهُ: مَا تَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنَ، وَآمُرُهُمْ بِالْخَيْرِ، وَأَنْهَاهُمْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ. قَالَ عُمَرُ ﵁: ذَلِكَ الذَّبْحُ.
