The Ruling on Praying Jumu'a in a Settlement That Lacks Its Conditions

Question

I have benefited to some extent from the blessing of knowledge of the Dar al-'Ulum. In the small villages of our area the Jumu'a prayer is generally performed; in my village too, people do not stop when they are stopped. If I myself refrain and raise the issue, the danger I sense is that people will turn against us, and the little of the religion they hear and act upon will also stop after this suspicion and opposition — to the point that they will not even be ready to listen.

Answer

(1) The position of the Hanafis on this issue is perfectly clear, and independent treatises with proofs have been published on it: “Awthaq al-'Ura”, “Ahsan al-Qira”, “al-Qawl al-Badi'” and others are adorned with proofs from hadith and fiqh. In a place where Jumu'a is not valid, the Zuhr prayer should be performed with a congregation.
