Taking Part in a Community Council Whose Rules Are Contrary to the Shari‘a

Question

Question: In our area the community council of the Ansari biradari (a kinship or caste community) has some rules which are not in accordance with the Shari‘a of Muhammad. For example, if someone wishes to hold a walima at a wedding, he must invite the biradari of the whole village or the biradari of the whole neighbourhood; if he invites one person from another neighbourhood, even if he is his relative, he must invite the whole biradari of that neighbourhood.

Answer

Since none of its provisions is in accordance with the Shari‘a of Muhammad, it is not a Shari‘a council. Taking part in it will lead to the strengthening and spread of things contrary to the Shari‘a, for which there is no permission in the Shari‘a.
