Dividing the Community of Muslims and Uniting It
Question
Question: What crime in the Shari‘a does a person commit who scatters the community (jama‘at) of the people of Islam and gives instruction to disciples? And what will a person receive who seeks to bring about agreement?
Answer
Scattering the community of the people of Islam for selfish motives (the desires of the self) and sowing division in it is, in the Shari‘a, the worst of crimes; whereas gathering the people of Islam upon some matter and bringing about agreement among them is the right of vicegerency (niyaba) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
