How to treat a Muslim whose outward appearance resembles that of disbelievers

Question

A certain man is a Muslim, but his outward appearance is like that of non-Muslims. During riots he goes to the house of some Muslims, and they, taking him for a disbeliever, kill him. The question requiring an answer is: will this slain man be resurrected with the disbelievers or with the Muslims?

Answer

If he was a Muslim and his end was not upon disbelief but upon Islam, then he is deserving of salvation, and in this world he is to be dealt with as it is commanded to deal with a Muslim. As for the resurrection, whoever loves someone and approves of his way will be resurrected with him: [ar]الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ[/ar] “A person is with whom he loves.
