The manner of the prayer over the Prophet’s ﷺ bier
Question
Hazrat Ibn Mas‘ud ﵁ narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said to Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ﵁: “When you have washed me and shrouded me, place the bier in this room of mine at the edge of the grave and go out for a little while, for one sa‘a (hour), for the first to pray over me will be my Lord ﷻ: He and His angels continually send mercy” (from “Madhaq al-‘Arifin”, the translation of “Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din”, vol. 4, chapter ten, on the mention of death, “Bab al-Wafat”, no. 10, pp.
Answer
This narration is in the “Tabaqat” of Ibn Sa‘d; its narrator is al-Waqidi, who is weak; moreover, it is mursal. ‘Allama al-‘Iraqi said the same in his “Takhrij”, as [noted] in the margin of “Ihya’ al-‘Ulum” (p. 400).
