Supplication for the deceased after the funeral prayer

Question

When the imam has finished the funeral prayer, in some places people make a supplication (du‘a) afterwards, and they regard as bad whoever does not make du‘a after the funeral prayer. In some places, after the funeral prayer, they recite “Qul huwa Allahu ahad” eleven times and [only] then lift the bier. In the books of fiqh, making du‘a after the funeral prayer or reciting “Qul huwa Allahu ahad” eleven times is not mentioned, because this prayer is itself a du‘a. Will the one who does this be an innovator or not?

Answer

In the books of fiqh, du‘a after the funeral prayer is not established; on the contrary, its disapproval is transmitted. Nor is it established [that one should] not lift the bier until “Qul huwa Allahu ahad” has been recited eleven times. Therefore this practice has no basis in the Shari‘a and is a bid‘a (innovation).
