The Ruling on Insolence towards the Holy Qur’an

Question

One Muhammad Khan had given the imam a Holy Qur’an with a Kashmiri translation to read. A year later the said Muhammad Khan needed the Qur’an for something and told ‘Abd al-Sattar, “My Qur’an is with the imam; bring it to me.” ‘Abd al-Sattar met the imam on the way and asked him for the Qur’an. The imam said to Pir Muhammad Yasin, “Muhammad Khan gave me that Qur’an; if he asks for it, let him stuff the Qur’an (na‘udhu billah) into himself.

Answer

With disrespect for the Holy Qur’an iman does not remain intact — a person becomes a kafir. But there should be no haste in pronouncing a fatwa of kufr on a Muslim until his purpose is determined. Here the imam’s purpose was not to insult the Holy Qur’an but to insult that man: had it been jewellery, gold, silver or any other thing, he would have said the same about it.
