Insolence towards the Qur’an
Question
A man, while reciting the Holy Qur’an, began quarrelling with another and abusing him. A third man said to him, “Look, do not utter obscenities with the Holy Qur’an before you — there is disrespect for the Qur’an in it.” He, becoming angry, said, “What harm is it to you? We will disrespect it — do what you like.” But the speaker did not at all know that this was a word of insolence. The question is: what ruling does the Sacred Law give on such a person, and what is the status of this sentence?
Answer
Disrespecting the Holy Qur’an is kufr, and uttering such a sentence is also insolence. Hence repentance is obligatory on the said person, and as a precaution let him also renew his marriage and renew his iman.
