Insulting an Amulet
Question
Zayd had a silver amulet made for his child, on which were the basmala and a few words of supplication. Bakr said to Zayd about the amulet, “All this is nonsense.” At this Zayd at once said, “I myself do not consider it worth even a hair below the navel.” Kindly give the answer in the light of the Qur’an and hadith.
Answer
The question is not clear: Zayd himself has the amulet made and himself likens it to such a thing. If he really thinks so, then why does he have it made? Let an explanation of this contradiction be sought from Zayd; then some meaning may emerge.
