The Ruling on Sorcery and on Seeking a Lost Item
Question
(1) Is it permissible for a Muslim to practise magic? And what is the ruling on one who performs a magical rite? (2) If someone has suffered a theft and, in order to recover his property, resorts to some practical magic or to an operation by means of the noble Qur’an — what is the ruling?
Answer
(1) Practising sorcery is a major sin. So in Sharh al-Fiqh al-Akbar. (2) To recite verses of the Qur’an and supplicate — oneself or through another — “O Allah, let my property be found,” is correct; such supplication is established in the noble hadith too. But to practise sorcery is not correct.
