Regarding One’s Spiritual Guide as the Fulfiller of Needs

Question

After the death of a certain spiritual guide, one of his disciples uttered these words: “O Allah, from whom shall we now seek our needs of religion and of this world? He from whom we used to seek our spiritual and bodily needs has departed from the world.” To what extent is it proper to utter such words? What is the ruling of the Sacred Law about such a person?

Answer

Originally the Fulfiller of needs is God alone, Who has no partner. To regard anyone else as the fulfiller of needs is contrary to the teachings of Islam; to seek one’s needs from anyone other than Allah the Exalted — from a spiritual guide and the like — is not permissible.
