The Fiqh of Imam al-Awza‘i
Question
Whenever there is a need to seek benefit on some particular matter, it is you who comes to mind. This time it is necessary to find out about Imam al-Awza‘i, who is known by the name of Imam al-Shafi‘i, and whose fiqh remained current in al-Sham (Syria) for about two hundred years and in Andalusia for forty years, and whom some people count among the rank of the four imams: have you seen any book in which the rulings of Imam al-Awza‘i’s fiqh are gathered together, or any book on the principles of al-Awza‘i’s fiqh?
Answer
I have not seen any independent book on the fiqh of al-Awza‘i. In any case, his madhhab is found rather rarely in the books of positive law (furu‘); in “al-Mabsut” the proportion is greater. In “al-Mizan al-Kubra”, al-Sha‘rani presents material even more extensive than in “al-Mabsut”.
