The Reliability of the Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyya

Question

Question: A certain person says that the Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyya is an unreliable book, and that Hazrat Awrangzeb was a harsh ruler; he turns away from the Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyya and does not accept its rulings. Do the ulama of Deoband also agree that if some ruling is taken from the Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyya, it is unacceptable and must be declared unreliable?

Answer

Awrangzeb ‘Alamgir was a man who observed the Sacred Law and followed the sunna. He did not compile the Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyya himself, but had it compiled through a large group of scholars. On the whole, the rulings set out in it are reliable and correct.
