Preaching While Seated on a Chair

Question

Many scholars, having had the legs of a chair washed, sit on the chair inside the mosque and deliver their sermon from it; some people say that preaching while seated on a chair is impermissible. Please inform such people, in light of the Sacred Law, whether it is permissible or impermissible for scholars to preach while seated on a chair inside the mosque.

Answer

In Sahih Muslim, vol. 1, p. 287, it is mentioned that the noble Prophet ﷺ, having seated himself on a chair in the mosque, expounded matters of religion; the legs of the chair appeared to be made of iron. Imam al-Bukhari ﵀ likewise mentions this in al-Adab al-Mufrad, p. 210. Objecting to what is established by a noble hadith is due to unfamiliarity [with it].
