Reciting the Qur’an for a fee
Question
Question: In some countries it is the custom that after the burial of the deceased, for four days or some other fixed number of days, the Holy Qur’an and other supplications are recited at the grave day and night, and reciters are appointed for this for a fee with special arrangements. What we wish to ask is: what is the ruling on doing so according to the noble Shari‘a? Please write with a reference.
Answer
It is impermissible; both the one who recites and the one who has it recited are sinful. That fee is haram, and returning it is necessary. Thus it is in Radd al-Muhtar.
