Receiving a salary from unlawful income
Question
Question: I work in my brother’s shop as an employee on a monthly salary of two hundred rupees. From the very beginning I have lived, eaten and drunk in my brother’s house, and he has provided for me. My brother’s income is entirely haram; the shop is one of articles for functions, which are rented out, and these articles too were bought with that same haram wealth.
Answer
In your letter, “articles for functions” is a general and vague expression. I take it to mean a marquee, tables, chairs, gas, floor coverings and the like. Renting out these things and collecting rent for them is not haram, even if those who hire them also do some improper things at their gatherings; because of that, the rental income does not become haram.
