Is One Who Arrives in Makka Before Hajj a Resident or a Traveller?
Question
A person arrives in noble Makka on 1 Dhu al-Hijja and intends to stay twenty days, and after completing Hajj he intends to leave for blessed Madinah on the 21st. During his stay in Makka, will such a person perform the prayer in full or shorten it (qasr)? Is he a resident (muqim) or a traveller (musafir)?
Answer
That person is not a resident but a traveller. He should shorten the prayer in Makka, and also in Mina, ‘Arafat and Muzdalifa. However, if he prays behind a resident imam, he will not shorten but will complete the prayer, as is the case with every traveller (“al-Bahr al-Ra’iq”, vol. 2, p. 143).
