Declaring oneself married to avoid tax
Question
My annual salary is four thousand rupees, on which income tax of 75 rupees is levied for a married person and two hundred rupees for an unmarried person. I am unmarried. If, by declaring myself married to the government, I do not pay 125 rupees of income tax, is that permissible for me or not?
Answer
These rupees are, after all, your own; you did not take them from anyone else. You saved your own rupees from being given to another — you did not give them to one who takes wrongfully. They are permissible for you. However, exposing yourself to legal danger by making a false statement is no wisdom at all.
