Giving a contribution for Holi

Question

ʿUmar lives at the mosque of a neighbourhood in which the Muslims are few and the Hindus very many. They come to him sometimes to collect contributions for the “gur-bans” (گڑ بنس) puja (a Hindu rite of worship), and sometimes to collect contributions for Holi (a Hindu spring festival). Should he give them a contribution?

Answer

In a situation of compulsion, let him give the money to those who come to ask for it, that is, let him make it their own property, and then they may spend it wherever they wish.
